I’m not young anymore and neither is my hair! I’ll do whatever I can to look and feel my best and it usually starts from the inside out. Today, I’m sharing 5 tips to help re-gain healthy hair that I have incorporated into my beauty routine.
I recently discovered a hair care line called Better Not Younger. Better Not Younger is the first hair-care brand specifically created for women 40+ to treat the root causes and visible signs of aging hair. Beauty veteran and “fiftypreneur” Sonsoles Gonzalez understood that mature hair was physiologically different and therefore had different needs. Partnering with an MIT chemist, she created this holistic line of products addressing scalp, hair and inner health and designed to give you healthier-looking hair today and even better hair tomorrow.
5 Tips To Healthy Hair
1.) Rethink The Way You Wash Your Hair
Always look for products that are right for YOUR hair type, whether it is oily, dry, normal, curly, fine or straight and avoid shampoos with harsh ingredients, such as ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate.
Experts suggest that many people over-shampoo or shampoo incorrectly. The standard rules of thumb are:
- Do not wash your every day unless it is super oily. Every other day is perfectly fine and let dry shampoo be your friend.
- Use only enough of the product to cover your hair.
- Avoid using very hot or very cold water.
- Always use a Wet Brush on damp hair.
I started using the Better Not Younger Wake Up Call Volumizing Shampoo a few months ago. It moisturizes and adds fullness to my thin, flat hair without drying it out and leaves my hair clean, light and shiny without weighing it down. I like the Wake Up Call Volumizing Conditioner as well.
2.) Detox Your Scalp
The number one thing you can do to help promote stronger, healthier hair growth is to detox your scalp. We’ve been taught that in order to preserve our hair we need to wash it less often, but what’s good for the hair isn’t as good for the scalp, so it can be a bit of a balancing act. You’re going to want to keep the scalp clean, regularly removing impurities. Leaving a build up of product on the scalp for several days in a row can cause follicles to clog and become more irritated. Better Not Younger’s NEW Dawn Activated Charcoal Scalp Cleanser is designed to provide deep cleansing and stimulation of the scalp using a rubber tipped comb applicator. This helps your hair grow thicker and faster.
3.) Deep Condition Your Hair At Least Once A Week
Deep conditioning your hair locks in hydration, rebuilds strength and improves shine and resilience. Lately, I have been using the Better Not Younger Hair Redemption Restorative Butter Mask. It is thick and buttery so once a week is perfect for my fine hair. I like to alternate between this and the Olaplex Perfector No. 3, another treatment that strengthens hair from within.
4.) Do NOT abuse Bleaching & Coloring and Always Use A Heat Protector
Over processing your hair is bad so make sure you talk to your colorist about any concerns you might have and go to a very reputable salon. Also, hot tools are cool, until you get burned…so think about this on your hair. Always keep heat settings under 400°F and use a heat protectorate. I use only the T3 Micro brand of styling tools (Straightening Iron & Single Pass Curl) for their smart heat technology which is less damaging to the hair.
BNY No Remorse Heat Protection & Taming Spray is a lightweight, powerful leave-in treatment that goes beyond heat protection to calm frizz and flyaways, strengthen hair strands, and seal in shine. This is one of the best heat protection sprays I have ever used, especially for this Texas humidity. It really helps with frizz!
5.) Eat Healthy and Consider Taking Vitamins Specific For Hair Health
Your nutrition affects every part of your body. So, if you are neglecting your diet, you are surely going to see some results in your hair. In fact, your nails, skin, and hair are some of the first places that will show with poor nutrition. I started taking Nutrafol. about 6 months ago to address my aging hair as well as some thinning after a dreadful experience with hair extensions. Nutrafol offers a customized solution to improve hair growth and quality. I take the Women’s Balance Vitamins (4 pills/day) which are specially designed for women before, during and after menopause. I also take the Hairbiotic (1 pill/day) which helps with gut health. A healthy gut (good and bad bacteria) means your body is better absorbing all the nutrients and vitamins you are feeding it. Lastly, I take the Vitamin B-Booster (1.5 ml./day) because it replenishes B vitamins depleted by stress to support hair follicle cycling. Stress is one of the leading causes of hair loss!
