10 Fashion Tips To Help You Look Younger
Clothes play a significant role in not only how I look, but how I feel! I believe we’re all on the same page with the notion that age is literally just a number and that number (whether it’s higher or lower) has nothing to do with what you should or shouldn’t wear. Aging is part of life, but hey, if I can take a few years off just by what I wear, then I’m all for it. Are you with me?
Here are 10 easy fashion tips that you can follow to instantly make you look younger in your clothes!
1.) Foundations are everything!
First things first: get the foundations right. You may know all about Spanx, but could you be neglecting two of your most important allies in the fight against ageing? Wearing the wrong bra can make you look heavier, shorter and older. Most women wear theirs too loose in the back and too tight in the cup. A sleek nude-hued T-shirt bra with gentle push-up effect will take years off. My favorite is the Spanx Bra-llelujah in nude. The back strap is made out of hosiery material and it literally looks good under every piece of clothing.
I also swear by this Spanx Bodysuit. I own it in nude and black. You will thank me later.
2.) Show off your assets
Covering up in baggy clothes can pile on up to 15 years, according to research. Participants thought that the same women appeared more than a decade younger when dressed in form-fitting clothing, even when they were asked to focus solely on their faces. Skirt and dress hemlines should hit the slimmest part of the area around your knee, whether that’s on the knee, just above or just below.
Pant hems should hit at the ankle, or, if you prefer a wide-leg fit, skim the bottoms of your shoes. Balance is key: if you prefer to cover your legs, show off your shoulders (the sexiest part of our bodies) or cinch in your waist, instead.
Bottom Line: DO NOT EVER HIDE BEHIND BAGGY CLOTHING and choose great-quality, beautiful clothing that enhances the body parts you’re most proud of.
3.) Find a great Tailor
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again. No amount of styling can save ill-fitting clothes, plus unflattering garments can age your entire look. But with the right tailor, your entire wardrobe can get an instant upgrade and shave years off your appearance.
4.) Wear minimalist shoes
Elongate your legs with metallic or nude sandals with simple straps and a heel. These designs give the illusion of extra height as well. A longer, sleeker body will instantly make you appear younger. Avoid chunky, heavy shoes that draw the eye downward.
5.) Opt for a scoop or v-neckline
When shopping for blouses, sweaters, and t-shirts, make sure you stock up on either scoop necks or v-necks. They not only lengthen the neck but they also enhance a woman’s silhouette. The V shouldn’t fall lower than the top of the cleavage. Smaller busts should opt for a less dramatic plunge, but a deeper-plunging neckline suits larger busts because it elongates the upper torso and balances it out. If you feel you’re revealing too much or you already have a long neck, add a camisole underneath. The V neck is best suited for larger busts, curvy and athletic shapes. The turtle-neck is not a good neckline for the 50+ woman.
6.) Update your jeans
Nothing ages you like frumpy, outdated denim. Remember the embarrassing mom jeans of the ’90s? Well, they’ve received a modern update with stretchy fabric that’s flattering on all figures. High rise, ankle length jeans are the most flattering, sitting two – three inches above the ankle bone. Find the right pair, and you’ll look younger than ever. If you have jeans with embellishment of any kind around the hemline, please do not wear them.
7.) Ditch Wearing All Black
Black definitely outlines the figure and can be suitable for almost any occasion. However, as we get older, our skin tends to become paler, so wearing black can create a harsh contrast — specifically on your face. It may emphasize wrinkles and highlight the dark shadows under the chin and around the eyes. Ease yourself in with greys, taupes and chocolate browns if you’re color-shy.
8.) Choose Patterns Wisely
If you love wearing prints, make sure you are choosing a pattern or a color that’s more of the moment—something a little bit brighter, for example, that feels current. Hard geometic lines look strict and aging while lighter, brighter shades with softer curved patterns are more youthful.
9. Choose your eyewear carefully
Believe it or not, your eyewear can age you. Avoid thick, horn rimmed, tortoise glasses that can draw attention to the hallow of the eyes. Opt instead for lighter, jewel toned rims that reflect light. Correctly chosen eyewear can greatly modernize your look. Different shapes do different things to your face. Cat-eye shapes lift up the face and actually make you look younger. If you aren’t sure what frame looks best on you, take pictures with different shapes on your face. I finally figured this one out after seeing myself in pictures.
10. Choose simple jewelry (less is more)
While older generations are big fans of jewelry that looks luxurious and massive, younger people prefer more minimalist accessories. So instead of piling on bracelets and necklaces, consider removing a few pieces and only leaving something simple when you go out. Opt for sleek, modern styles in interesting shapes or layer on a few trending chain necklaces.
