Double Denim (mixing and matching separate denim pieces in one outfit) is a fashion trend that keeps coming back season after season. It started on street style blogs but has migrated into women’s and men’s closets as a laid back casual look and even as a refined classic ensemble. I’m sharing 5 rules I suggest you follow when wearing denim on denim to look modern and tasteful no matter where you are going.
It’s also fun to note that double denim is often referred to in the fashion world as the Canadian Tuxedo (so named because Bing Crosby was denied entrance to a Canadian hotel in 1951 for being in head to toe denim), and ladies, this look will be everywhere this spring!

How To Wear Double Denim
1. Pair Different Shades of Denim
One of the easiest ways to crack the double denim look is to wear different shades of denim. Think about pairing a darker denim jacket with lighter denim jeans or vice versa but do not wear the same wash head to toe. This creates a denim look that is broken up a bit.
2. Wear Dressed Up Denim With Something Distressed
Wearing a somewhat polished piece of denim with a more distressed piece will make you look less like you are wearing a uniform. The distressed element gives it a little breathing space and the dressed up piece gives it an elevated look.
3. Break Up the Denim Pieces
Double denim needs to be broken up with other elements. Throw on a white tee (vs. a chambray shirt under a denim jacket and jeans) or a leopard or striped tee. An outfit that is all the same tone and all the same color needs to have a pop somewhere.
4. Steer Clear of Denim Accessories
Save your denim accessories like handbags, tote bags, hats and baseball caps for your other outfits. It is way too much to accessories denim with denim.
5. No Western Styling for a Modern Take
This one goes without saying, but stay away from western styling. No cowboy hats or cowboy boots if you want a modern, fresh take on styling double denim, unless of course you are headed to the ranch or the rodeo.

A highly recommend adding a denim trench to your wardrobe if you do not already own one. The one I am wearing is by W by Worth and I adore that it is fully lined in a blue and white silk stripe. I found a very similar trench here and I also really love this tied trucker jacket (huge trend!). This elevated tie jacket with a darker wash is also super cool.
My jeans are a favorite by Citizens of Humanity called the Olivia because they are high waisted and hit at a great length for sandals, booties and flats.
I’m wearing a pair of Prada sandals that are a few years old but this pair is similar and this pair is a steal version.
