Today, I’m sharing my tips and ideas on how to get a more organized closet so getting dressed will be easier and more enjoyable. Ask anyone who knows me well and they will tell you I am a ‘neat freak’ and closet organization is one of my defining personality traits! After all, it is the perfect time for some closet nirvana during our stay in place!
My last post, 5 Questions To Ask Yourself When Doing A Closet Clean Out hopefully helped you with de-cluttering. Have you done a closet detox lately?
Tips & Ideas On Closet Organization
Let me first state that I by no means have a ‘magazine worthy’ closet. We built our home 14 years ago and there are definitely updates that my closet could use…but I’m proud to say it is neat, tidy and VERY organized!
1.) Splurge on Space Saving Hangers
Ditch those plastic or wooden hangers that take up a ton of room and opt for a sleek, velvet version instead. The streamlined, no-slip design will double the amount of hanging space in your closet and help keep clothes off the floor. My favorite ones are from Bed, Bath & Beyond. Container Store also offers good options. Disclaimer…I do still use crystal clear hangers for my skirts and pants because I find they hold better than the velvet brand clip ons. If you have wire hangers in your closet…eek!!!!
2.) Organize Your Clothes by Color and Style
Hang all of your white tops together, followed by black tops, blue tops, etc. Sleeveless, followed by short sleeve, long sleeve, etc. in coordinating color story. All of your jackets should be together, skirts hung together, pants together, etc. This really sounds like a no-brainer but I can’t tell you how many closets I have walked in and women are not doing this.
3.) Ditch Your Shoe Boxes & Invest in Plastic Containers
If you do not have the luxury of built in shoe shelves, I have found putting your shoes in plastic shoe box containers is the most efficient and space saving option, plus it keeps all your shoes dust free. Container store has various sizes for shoes, high heels/booties and boots. These stack beautifully on shelves or on the floor of your closet. You can also find some options at Walmart.
4.) Invest In Sweater Storage
Is there anything worse than opening a previously pristine closet only to be toppled by clothing? Here in the south, we only use our sweaters perhaps 2-3 months out of the year. I find that tucking them away in these fabulous sweater bins and adding a few lavender scented cedar balls keeps my sweaters where I can see them plus safe from those damaging pests.
5.) Utilize Seasonal Space
It is very important to switch out your clothes between seasons so that you have current season options at your fingertips. There are various ways to do this depending on your space. If you have a small closet, just rotate your ‘in season’ items to the forefront of your closet and tuck your ‘out of season’ garments to the very back (or sides) of the racks. If you have high seasonal racks like I do, it is necessary to do a season switch out twice a year. A spare closet in another bedroom could also become a seasonal closet for you. The main goal is to have all your current season clothing within your reach for ease in dressing.
My garment hook comes in super handy and I keep a step ladder in my closet for reaching anything off high shelves.
6.) Use Drawer Organizers
Your drawers should be as clutter free as your closet. Drawer Organizers are a smart way to keep socks, lingerie, undergarments, hosiery and accessories organized, visible, accessible and protected.
7.) Make Baskets & Bins Your BFF
When it comes to closet organization, there are some things that just don’t have a logical place to go. To keep clutter at bay, employ storage baskets…they are great to corral odds and ends. I love having a small, pretty storage ottoman in my closet. I use this to sit on when putting on shoes and I store odds and ends in it.
