The Coastal Grandmother aesthetic has been coined as the ultimate vibe for the summer and it’s not just for older, wealthier women who live near the beach. CGM is a whole ‘lifestyle’ that includes what to wear, what to do and how to decorate your home – it’s an obsession followed by millennials to middle ager’s and everyone in between! The coastal grandmother aesthetic is trending big on TikTok and other social media…everyone’s talking about it, and women everywhere are obsessed with it, including me!
Let’s discuss exactly what it is and how you can channel this charming style…or perhaps you already are!

What is Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic?
Perhaps you’ve always felt an affinity to Diane Keaton’s character in Something’s Gotta Give or Natasha Richardon’s portrayal of the glamorous mom in The Parent Trap—if so, you may be a coastal grandmother. Maybe you find yourself following Ina Garten’s roast chicken recipe with a cable knit sweater tied around your shoulders—that’s coastal grandmother material. And finally, if you’ve ever felt the desire to take a long solo walk on the beach in a button-down and a woven hat—there’s no question that you’re a coastal grandmother through and through.
The CGM aesthetic is based on the simple, classic style of a middle-aged woman living life in an oceanfront property…think Nancy Myer’s. Coastal grandmothers wear neutral colors in flowy linen and cashmere, loose lines and a touch of stripes. They accessorize with large bags and straw hats. Coastal grandmothers love to garden and cook fresh meals in their open concept kitchens, with goods they picked up at the farmers markets, accessorized with neutral and natural elements like butcher block and rattan. They love chic interiors and entertaining. Coastal grandmothers sip wine every afternoon while reading on their wrap-around front porch.
Celebrity book lover Jenna Bush Hager described ‘CGM’ as a “breezy beige feel” on The Today Show, and celebrity book-loving icon Oprah is known for this style as well.
If You Love Hydrangeas, Breezy Button-Downs, and Ina Garten, You Might Be a “Coastal Grandmother”
CGM’s are those who are effortlessly stylish, have a put-together presence (without trying too hard), know how to be the best hostess (while never breaking a sweat), and appreciate the finer things (yet still feel approachable). It’s also essential to note that you don’t have to have grandchildren, nor live on the beach, to be a coastal grandmother.
A few other celebrities who have embraced this trend are Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez and Katie Holmes.
Here’s a list of 10 things a coastal grandmother would do:
- Wear her husband’s white button-down with worn in jeans to dinner
- Keep a notebook of inspirational phrases
- Pick fresh flowers from her garden
- Open a bottle of wine at 4 pm
- Take long walks on the beach
- Wear a signature stack of gold jewelry
- Swear by a capsule wardrobe of neutral colors in linen and cashmere
- Invite her friends over every week for afternoon tea or bridge
- Show up to every occasion in a straw hat
- Shop local farmer’s markets and flea markets

What I’m Wearing:
I picked up this cotton/linen dusk blue blouse (only $25 and several colors to choose from) and ordered it oversized in a LG. Paired with these flowy white pants ($36, size SM) and added my Gucci Slides and Raffia Bucket Hat (similar) to get my CGM look. I love this easy, breezy summer outfit. Now I just need a beach and my glass of wine and I’m all set.
